Are you aware that in Kerala if you have a third child, you need to pay Rs. 10,000 as penalty? The third child is also not given basic amenities like free education and mid-day meal at government schools. However, you will be surprised to know that such Indian laws, no matter how strange they sound, simply do not stand a chance in the weirdness race when it comes to bizarre laws prevailing across the globe.
For instance, in Thailand, it is illegal to leave your house without wearing underwear. Here's a low down on some of the most interesting laws practiced in various countries....
Switzerland: Switzerland is known for its historical antiquity, breath-taking scenery and a sense of adventure and discovery. But it seems to have some queer laws when it comes to relieving oneself. It is illegal in Switzerland to flush the toilet after 10 pm. A man is also not allowed to stand up and urinate after 10 pm. Mohit Saxena, an IT Professional, explains,"I was in Switzerland for almost three years and the law about not flushing toilets after 10 pm stands valid for all those who live in apartments, courtesy neighbours. Obviously if you live in a private house who cares?"South Korea: In South Korea, traffic police are supposed to report about the bribes they receive from motorists. Abhishek Jain, a stock broker comments, "Do they also get to keep the bribes as a reward? I know it is very common in India to bribe a traffic police man, but reporting all the bribes you took at the end of the day is uncanny."Surendra Visnoi, an advocate, explains, "I'm not sure how such laws come into effect, but they are virtually 'invisible laws' that nobody abides by and no one enforces. For instant, there is Treasure-Trove Act, 1878 in India according to which, it is mandatory for a finder to give notice to the collector (any Revenue-officer) incase of a discovery of 'treasure'. Where 'treasure' means 'things' that were 'hidden' and discovered by chance. In a Nagpur judgment, a woman 'with knowledge that her ornaments had been hidden by her husband,' was not accepted as the owner of the same, rather the 'labourers who dug the ground' were the finders."Texas: A recently passed anticrime law in Texas states that criminals are required to give their victims 24 hours notice, either orally or in writing, to explain the nature of the crime to be committed. Neeraj Kumar, tax and legal consultant, shares, "The thing that people don't realize who are not from the Texas are that these laws are always overlooked and 95% of the time are not even enforced. I guess lawbreakers are not even aware of this laws' existence." Abhinav Rajavat, a senior engineer, says" How weird is that? It really sound funny that a person who wants to murder or loot someone will call up the chief of police saying that he's entering the city and has the intension of murdering, so please come and arrest me!California: In California an ordinance was passed making it illegal for anyone to try and stop a child from playfully jumping over puddles of water. Ashok Sharma, a consultant, opines, "It is very difficult to implement any such law in India. Moreover, is this an issue to be taken into consideration at all? I guess people and the government of California are more concerned about the rights of children, but what about their safety?"Massachusetts: Snoring is considered as one of the biggest relationship wreckers as it can annoy your spouse to great lengths. But have you ever thought that there could be a law for snoring. Snoring is prohibited in Massachusetts unless all bedroom windows are closed and securely locked. Kirti Singh, who works with an MNC, says, "Snoring is extremely common and about twenty five per cent of all men snore; about half as many women snore too. I know it is a problem, but snoring is not an easy thing to measure subjectively as the typical snorer is less disturbed by the snoring than his or her partner. But it's really irritating that you can snore only when the windows and doors are closed. How am I supposed to know whether I will be snoring in my sleep or not?"Oklahoma: In a majority of countries, women are given the same rights as modern men, but in Oklahoma women are forbidden from doing their own hair without being licensed by the state. Anu Singh, a costumer care executive, asks, "How do they catch the defaulters? This law is really dumb. It is really unbelievable that women of Oklahoma have to apply for a license to comb their hair themselves."This country is known for severe weather, but it will not be wrong to say that it is also known for one of the funniest laws. In Oklahoma, you can be fined/arrested for making ugly faces at a dog. Ankur Srivastva, a marketing executive, says, "I have two dogs and while playing with them I usually make faces. How weird is this law? If such law is implemented in India, I would be the first one to be arrestedTurkey: In Turkey all married women must get their husband's permission if they wish to have a job, they must live wherever the husband wishes to reside and they must surrender all jointly held assets when divorced. Sheetal Rajdhan, a content head with an MNC says, "This bitter sense of alienation often leads to anger and bitterness towards the system of thoughts and social structures which dominate most Islamic countries. Hardly any notice has been taken of the tragedy and trauma suffered by the women living in the country such as Turkey."Washington: In Washington a law to reduce crime states that it is mandatory for a motorist with criminal intentions to stop at the city limits and telephone the chief of police as he is entering the town. Abhinav Rajavat, Bank Manager, opines, "It really sounds funny that a person who wants to murder or loot someone will call up the chief of police that he is entering the city with the intension of murdering! This law is very impractical."
